Custom Paper Bags: Types, Materials, and When to Use Them

Introduction

Custom paper bags are the most visible part of retail packaging. A customer walks out of a store carrying your bag. Everyone behind them sees your logo. That’s why even small brands invest in a good bag—it’s a moving billboard.

But “paper bag” covers a lot of ground. A cheap shopping bag and a luxury ribbon-handle bag are both paper bags, but they’re different products. This guide breaks down the types, materials, cost, and how to choose.

Common Types

paper bag handle types twist ribbon flat patchFour handle types — twisted cord (top left), satin ribbon (top right), die-cut flat (bottom left), reinforced patch (bottom right).

Twist-handle paper bags. The most common retail style. A twisted paper cord is glued into the top. Strong, inexpensive, and reusable. Used by grocery chains, bookstores, and mid-range retail.

Ribbon-handle paper bags. Fabric ribbon (satin, grosgrain) attached to the bag with adhesive or eyelets. Looks and feels premium. The standard for jewelry, cosmetics, and luxury retail.

Flat-handle / die-cut handle bags. A flat paper handle or a die-cut hole in the top. Minimalist and cheap. Common for takeaway, small retail, and budget brands.

Patch-handle bags. A reinforced paper patch is glued where the handle attaches. Better weight capacity. Used for heavier items like wine bottles or gift sets.

Materials

The bag body is almost always made from one of these:

  • Kraft paper: natural brown, 80–150 GSM. The default for twist-handle bags. Eco-friendly, sturdy, and cheap. Look for FSC-certified board if sustainability claims matter to your customers.
  • White card: bright white surface, 120–200 GSM. Full-color print looks best on white. Used for premium retail and gift bags.
  • Coated art paper: smooth, printable surface, often laminated. The choice for luxury bags with foil or embossing.
  • Laminated board: a thin board layer under the paper for extra rigidity. Used for high-end gift bags that hold their shape.

Handle material matters almost as much as the body. A nice bag with a cheap plastic handle feels wrong at the register.

Sizing

Paper bags are sized by width × gusset (depth) × height. The most common retail sizes:

  • Small: 15×8×20 cm (jewelry, small gifts)
  • Medium: 25×10×30 cm (apparel, books, cosmetics)
  • Large: 35×12×40 cm (multiple items, wine)

If your bag holds rigid boxes, measure the box and add 1–2 cm on each side. A bag that’s too tight tears when the customer pushes the box in.

Cost and MOQ

Cost. A twist-handle kraft bag at 1,000–5,000 units costs cents per bag. Ribbon-handle white card bags with full print cost more—often 0.80–2.00 depending on size and finish. Foil stamping and lamination add to that.

The main cost drivers:

  1. Paper weight (heavier = more expensive)
  2. Handle material (ribbon costs more than twisted paper)
  3. Print (full-color on both sides costs more than one color)
  4. Finishes (foil, embossing, lamination)

MOQ. Custom paper bags typically start at 500–1,000 units. Smaller runs are possible but the setup cost spreads thin, so per-unit price rises. [可替换为实际口径]

When to Use Each Type

Use twist-handle kraft bags if:

  • You’re a mid-range retail brand or grocery
  • You need a cheap, reusable bag in volume
  • Eco-friendly positioning matters (kraft is recyclable)

Use ribbon-handle white card bags if:

  • You’re selling jewelry, cosmetics, or premium gifts
  • The bag should feel as good as the product
  • You want customers to reuse it as a gift bag later

Use flat-handle bags if:

  • You’re takeaway, fast-casual, or budget retail
  • You need minimum cost per bag
  • The bag is a one-use carrier, not a brand statement

Pairing with Boxes

The best retail brands use a system: a rigid box for the product, a paper bag to carry it out. The bag doesn’t need to match the box exactly—it needs to share colors or materials so they look like one set.

A navy rigid box with gold foil pairs well with a navy ribbon-handle bag with the same gold foil. Don’t try to match patterns; match colors and finishes.

FAQ

What GSM paper is best for custom paper bags? 80–120 GSM for twist-handle retail bags, 150–200 GSM for ribbon-handle luxury bags. Heavier paper holds shape and feels more premium.
